At Star Cement, we have understood the need to act effectively and urgently to contribute to the mitigation of the impacts of climate change, which is why our actions in climate matters are of utmost priority. We take climate change as a challenge, but also as a unique opportunity for our operations and value chain; therefore, we are committed to mitigating direct and indirect CO2 emissions. Being, a responsible business organization and a climate steward we identify alternative materials for reducing clinker factor, embracing alternate forms of energy and adopting new technologies for energy efficiency.
Reducing Clinker Factor in Cement
We identify and utilize alternative raw materials wherever possible to reduce the stress on our natural resources and address climate change. We replace clinker with alternative blending materials like pozzolana, slag and fly ash to produce blended cements, which contributes to our low carbon transformation journey.
~ 90% of our cement portfolio comprises of blended cement which is an integral part of our climate strategy.
Enhance Co-Processing of Waste
We reduce our dependency on fossil fuels by incorporating alternative fuels in our fuel mix. This enhances our Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR). Thus, we explore other industrial wastes to substitute coal and reduce the environmental impacts.
Adopting Energy Efficiency Measures
We proactively engage with stakeholders to innovate and identify emerging technologies that pave the pathway for reducing energy demand and fulfilling our climate goals.
Increasing use of Green Power
We continue to explore ways for replacing traditional energy sources even as we increase our operating efficiency through the identification and implementation of energy-saving options. We believe that incorporating green energy in the form of solar and Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) into our operations will enable us to not only overcome obstacles presented by fuel availability but also strengthen our resilience to rising fuel prices.
Optimizing Logistics Transportation
We transport our raw materials and end products by road through our fleet of 190 trucks. All fleet movement are planned in the most sustainable manner through Integrated Vehicle Management System, reverse logistics and applying greener fuel with the objective of minimizing cost and emissions.
Removing Emissions Through Offsets
Planting trees is an important solution to tackle climate change and achieving carbon neutrality for any organization. Trees sequester carbon dioxide and provide a vital carbon sink. We maintain green cover in and around mining and plant operation areas to enhance our offsets on a year-on-year basis.
Preserving the air quality in and around our plants and mines has been a priority for us. We have always been stringent about monitoring our air emissions and ensuring safe air quality around us.

We take cognizance of the water scarcity in different regions of our country and interconnectedness of water cycle with the impacts of climate change. Hence, we continuously monitor the water stress based on the Ground Water Assessments and hydrogeological studies.
Our Actions
All cement producing units are based on dry grinding method.
All condensers are based on air cooled systems.
Addressed wastage of water from the overhead tank by installing a tank level sensor, which will now ensure excess water is routed to a sub tank.
All facilities are zero liquid discharge ensuring 100% wastewater is recycled.
Rainwater harvesting across the plants.
Circular Economy
We recognize that every material has an intrinsic value not only in its use phase but also at the end of life. The intrinsic value of waste streams can be unlocked through efficient and responsible management of waste.
Our Approach
As a responsible corporate, we inculcate the 3R approach i.e., Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This involves proactive efforts towards identifying alternatives to clinker and fuel while segregating, monitoring and ensuring safe disposal of the waste generated at our facilities, thereby ensuring resource conservation and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

We have implemented an organized mining plan outlining all our mineralization activities. The plan is aimed at environmental safety and social safety of all the people associated in the activities. While developing the plan, we also take into considerations the measures required for the mine’s eventual closure.
We ensure careful and efficient extraction with the goal of “Zero Waste” and enriching the mines’ mineral life.
Understanding our current positions, we will strive to enhance our rating to achieve at least 4-star rating by 2025 at all our mines.
Star Rating received
by our Limestone Captive Mines
Ministry of Mines launched the scheme of ‘Star Rating of Mines’ in 2016 for recognising miners and mining companies for their efforts and initiatives towards implementation of the Sustainable Development.
Based on internal assessment, all mines have achieved 4-star rating.
Our Khub limestone mine has obtained SA 8000 certificate which is based on internationally recognized standards of decent work, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ILO conventions, and national laws.
We have always been fully complaint with all environmental regulations governing conservation of nature, wildlife, flora and fauna and are committed towards safeguarding the regenerative processes and interactive ecosystems.
All our sites have undergone a primary biodiversity assessment as part of EIA, which helps us evaluate the overall biodiversity risk for a defined site having different habitat types. As per the assessment none of our units are in close proximity to any critically endangered zones.
Enhancing Green Energy in Operations
Star Cement has successfully implemented 24.8 MW WHRS capacity in its Lumshnong plant. As part of our commitment to increase the use of sustainable energy sources and achieving a 15% share of green energy by 2027.
This initiative contributes towards our less dependency on fossil fuels and be more resilient in our sustainability journey.
Achieving Water Positivity
Rainwater harvesting presents an opportunity to gather, transport, and store rainfall as a proactive measure to mitigate water scarcity and prepare for future water stress. At Star Cement, we have utilized the opportunity to harvest rainwater at our Guwahati and Lumshnong unit. Total rainwater harvested during the financial year was 0.74 million KL.
